The New Guy

I don’t know if maybe having low expectations coming into a movie makes it better, but I actually really dug this one. It made me laugh out loud several times, which is more than I can say for a lot of comedies. Maybe it’s because DJ Qualls is such a goofy lookin dude that it’s a little hard not to laugh. He’s so skinny and he has such a gigantic nose that it’s like he’s me, but twice as skinny and with twice as huge a nose. Despite the multitude of celebrity cameos and a slow start, the movie has a couple of really great parts in it. Oh yeah, at the end it gets a little sappy and teen movie-ish, but otherwise it’s entertaining. And that’s the whole point of a movie isn’t it? Besides that, I don’t know if there’s anyone who can’t appreciate a story about a big nerd who changes his life for the better and becomes one of the most popular and successful guys at his school. I gave it a fairly solid 3.5 on the awesomeness scale mainly due to the fact that it had not one, but two gorgeous ladies in it: Eliza Dushku and Zooey Deschanel. They were both the best and probably the most accomplished actors in the movie too, which didn’t hurt… except in comparison to all the semi-horrible acting by everyone else.
