National Treasure: Book of Secrets

Filed under N - DVD Movie Club

Just as thrilling as the first in terms of the depth this movie goes to in exploring the legends of our country’s past. A compelling treasure hunt surrounds some of our most well-known relics, and involves the Resolute Desks, the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and the City of Gold. Nicholas Cage is, well, Nicholas Cage, but still… his persona is almost a perfect fit for this type of character - excitable, yet intelligent and methodical. Some of the humor struggles, but a lot of it pays off. Worth the watch with a four on our flamescale.

The Naked Gun

That low-life scum O.J. Simpson was actually pretty funny in the Naked Gun series, but if you’re a fan of Leslie Nielsen’s deadpan style and you haven’t seen this classic, it’s one of his funniest films. Nielsen plays Frank Drebin, a bumbling cop who always ends up saving the day despite his inability to perform even the most menial of tasks without screwing it up somehow. While I’m not usually a fan of slapstick, it’s done to great effect and complements Nielsen’s foolish, sarcastic humor perfectly. Not the kind of epic film that deserves a 5, or even a 4, but it’ll do the trick to make you laugh.

The New World

This movie is the biggest waste of life for everyone involved in writing it, filming it, acting in it, watching it, and anything else having to do with it including using the DVD case as a blunt object with which to slowly bludgeon oneself to death after watching it. It really can’t get any worse, folks. The film was two-and-a-half hours long, but if you cut out all the parts where nothing was happening it could have been shortened to fifteen minutes. So Pocahontas falls in love with John Smith, he leaves for England, then she marries John Rolfe and they go back to England. Pocahontas sees John Smith one time and nothing happens, then she dies. The end. There, I just saved you 2.5 hours of your life you can spend doing something more productive, like counting the number of liver spots on your grandma’s arms or shredding lettuce by hand.

The New Guy

I don’t know if maybe having low expectations coming into a movie makes it better, but I actually really dug this one. It made me laugh out loud several times, which is more than I can say for a lot of comedies. Maybe it’s because DJ Qualls is such a goofy lookin dude that it’s a little hard not to laugh. He’s so skinny and he has such a gigantic nose that it’s like he’s me, but twice as skinny and with twice as huge a nose. Despite the multitude of celebrity cameos and a slow start, the movie has a couple of really great parts in it. Oh yeah, at the end it gets a little sappy and teen movie-ish, but otherwise it’s entertaining. And that’s the whole point of a movie isn’t it? Besides that, I don’t know if there’s anyone who can’t appreciate a story about a big nerd who changes his life for the better and becomes one of the most popular and successful guys at his school. I gave it a fairly solid 3.5 on the awesomeness scale mainly due to the fact that it had not one, but two gorgeous ladies in it: Eliza Dushku and Zooey Deschanel. They were both the best and probably the most accomplished actors in the movie too, which didn’t hurt… except in comparison to all the semi-horrible acting by everyone else.

Napoleon Dynamite

If you’ve already seen it and you’re reading this, stop now because you already know how much better it is than getting a karate jump kick to the knee. For the people who haven’t seen it, watch it only one time and you’ll wonder why in the world this movie was ever made. Watch it again and you’ll laugh your cute little tush off. I only didn’t give it a five on the ratings scale because it didn’t really have much of a plot. Other than that it totally rocked the party that rocks the body.
