Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

If Johnny Depp wasn’t such a bad-ass, I’d think it queer for his character, “Willy Wonka,” to bear such a striking resemblance in manner and in voice to Michael Jackson. Depp is a frigging great actor; my favorite at the moment, in fact. His performances are all but flawless. He does a perfect southern accent in “The Astronaut’s Wife,” a perfect New England accent in “Blow,” a perfect drunken pirate in “…Caribbean,” and the to-a-tee Mr. Howell from Gilligan’s Island in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” just to name a few. He is one of the best actors out there. People who want to compare this movie to the old version featuring Gene Wilder, you suck; go away. I have not the patience for your incessant babbling. This is a great movie for what it is, and I believe it stays truer to the book (besides the annoying Willy Wonka flashbacks) in many ways more so than the older film. I’m going to have to read the book to check on that. Four, it was pretty awesome.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Wow, what a cool movie! This was a treat to watch, because I literally watch like a movie almost every single day of my life. (Blockbuster Online, baby!) I’m always thrilled when a movie with such a stylized quality and visual appeal such as this comes across my viewing area. It has a unique story and interesting characters whose lives are all intermingled, not only because they are family, but because the way past events in their lives have shaped their views of each other and of life itself. Just an overall very interesting and slightly funny film, with a kind of morbid, dark humor to it that gives it that extra punch it needed to bring it to a 4 on our awesome scale of greatness.
