Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Filed under E - DVD Movie Club

Not only is Jim Carrey the man, but if Kate Winslett was a man she’d be the man too. Visually, this movie was absolutely brilliant. Genius, to be exact. Story-wise, it was stunning and quite refreshing. The entire thing was done so magnificently that you really just have to watch it to have any idea what I’m talking about. The French dude who directed this movie is a pimp-magician with the camera; he used all camera tricks and very few (if any) special effects. This has to be one of the greatest movies I have seen in the past 6 months, and it’s definitely the best Focus Feature film I’ve ever watched in my life. Other movies from Focus Features include “Lost in Translation,” “Swimming Pool”, and “Vanity Fair,” all of which totally sucked, and I haven’t even seen the last one. This is a 5-flame movie.

Anchorman

Will Ferrell proves yet again in this movie that he is a funny, funny, messed up person. I have to say I was disappointed. Don’t get your curtains all in a bunch, because I’m not saying this wasn’t a hilarious movie. It was just a lot less hilarious than I thought it was going to be. I just didn’t laugh all that much, and if you know me you’re well aware that I laugh at just about everything. In any case, see this movie if you’re into the whole “retro news anchor loses job to woman, then gains it back in a stunning turn of events” genre. Otherwise, still see it but don’t be mad that I sort of just gave away the entire story.

M. Night Shayamalan’s The Village

Don’t hate me because of how great I look. Oh the review, right… or because I thought this was a decent movie. Pretty much everyone I talked to said it sucked, but just because it wasn’t scary doesn’t mean there was no value to it. Originality? Come on, when have I seen anything like this before, except maybe in “The Wizard of Oz.” Well, I guess not really. M. Night even makes a cameo, which (surprise) is totally rad, just like in his other movies! Too bad I’m only giving it a 3.5. Since other people thought it was so worthless I wanted to let my opinions of the movies I watch be affected by what all the cool people think, so I had to take some points off. No just kidding, it actually doesn’t deserve a 4 but it’s better than average.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

I just got done watching this horrible, horrible piece of crap. Next time they need someone to take a lame comic from the 1920′s and throw in some uninteresting jokes, a tired plot, and a predictable sequence of events, they should hire me to do it. At least then I would have made some money while I wasted a bunch of my time. If I only had four words to describe this movie, that would rule because then I could stop writing and go chug olive juice straight from the can.

Napoleon Dynamite

If you’ve already seen it and you’re reading this, stop now because you already know how much better it is than getting a karate jump kick to the knee. For the people who haven’t seen it, watch it only one time and you’ll wonder why in the world this movie was ever made. Watch it again and you’ll laugh your cute little tush off. I only didn’t give it a five on the ratings scale because it didn’t really have much of a plot. Other than that it totally rocked the party that rocks the body.

I, Robot

I, Jay thought this was a pretty dern good pic. It had action, special effects that make you go “shwing!,” and of course, Will Smith, whose hot, ripped bod is revealed in several moments during the film. In fact I can actually say as a heterosexual individual that Will Smith had an overall sexiness rating that was slightly higher than his female co-star, who I don’t believe I’d seen in a movie before. Even though everything turned out okay, there was a good, original plot (which I am told was not really all that much like the book it was based on). It still managed to entertain me for quite a while, which is hard because I watch so many movies and I tend to begin self-mutilating… myself, if the movie starts to suck.

Dodgeball

Ben Stiller is a funny guy, but this one is definitely a rental. I’ll already spoil the surprise for you and tell you I gave it a mere 2.5 on the scale of awesomeness. Sorry to give it away so early in the review, but this picture had a ton of slapstick which was sometimes funny and sometimes not. If you rent the DVD, check out the alternate ending. This movie would have been ten times better if it had ended that way instead of the dumb, typical way it actually did. Oh I almost forgot, the extra .5 on there is because Ben Stiller’s wife, formerly Marsha Brady, is lookin pretty good throughout the duration.

Collateral

Tired of the same old action flicks? I’m not being sarcastic here – watch this movie. The pacing and unpredictability make it one of the best action flicks I’ve seen since “Zoonanigans VI: Monkeys in Love.” It was tight yo, and I finally realized while watching it that Jamie Foxx is actually a decent actor. The best part is at the end when Tom Cruise… oops, you’ll have to go see it to find out what I was about to say, you loser.
